Scrap Happy August 2022

It is time to join Kate and the others to show what we have made from scrap and hopefully inspire you to have a go too.

First off I would like to ask you for feedback. Now that all 6 chairs for Mrs Snail’s shop (follow the link to Jan in the list at the end of this post to meet the Snail of Happiness) I wonder which is your favourite?

Jan very kindly put them all out in the shop and took photos from different angles. I have started on the curtains for the upstairs store room / teaching room but those will take a while before being ready to show you.

I didn’t just take stuff to her – I bought as well. Her table of fabric offcuts was just too tempting to ignore! Apart from small pieces my stash is now down to the tatty and the sludgy colours. I wanted to make a new bag to replace one which had disintegrated and there was nothing suitable in any of my boxes so I indulged. The royal blue cord is for the outside but I couldn’t choose between the others for the lining, pockets and trim so I bought them all! Some of the pieces are quite big so there was plenty for other things as well.

The last few days have been hot so I have stayed indoors in the cool and decided to use the time to play with my new purchases. I didn’t have the interfacing I need for the bag so I chose to start with a Japanese crossover apron using a pattern from the book ‘Sashiko’ by Jill Clary which I had borowed from the library. Once I started I discovered how rusty my dressmaking skills are – then realised it is about 40 years since I sewed any clothes! It is wearable and I will just have to practice but probably on things like more aprons which don’t have to be perfect!

Oh the apron looks great, and they are really functional. All those clothes sewing techniques will come back to you with a bit of practice.
As for my favourite seat cover, it’s always the latest one that you have delivered!!

This made me giggle: “my stash is now down to the tatty and the sludgy colours”. Those new purchases should take care of that. Love the apron, and how fine those chairs look, side by side, with their snappy seat covers. Can’t pick a favorite. They are all so pretty. That royal blue fabric is fabulous!

Gosh, I haven’t sewn clothes for myself for about forty years either! I do not mean to cop out of making a choice, but seeing the chairs next to each other, I cannot help thinking what a wonderful advertisement they are for things that can be created with items purchased from the shop. Collectively, they look beautiful. I like your apron too.

the chairs look marvelous all lined up, my favorite is the multi-coloured tufted one. Love your selfie and the apron, it looks cheerful and practical. When the children were small I actually did dressmaking from home – I made my wedding dress and all the bridesmaids dresses – the children’s clothes when they were young. Now the only time I sew for myself is to make handwoven pieces, usually for conferences and hardly ever wear them, mostly too dressy for my non-existent social life. How life changes as it marches on!!

Thank you for picking one. Back in the day I did loads of sewing and like you made my own weding dress but as the children got older and life busier it fell by the wayside. Latterly I have found it simpler to buy things from charity shops as there are few fabric shops locally and what they sell is expensive. Now I can buy remnants I will have another go.

All the chairs are fun, but I’m in love with the goldenrod one with the squares 🙂

Design-wise, I like the two that are lavendar tones the best. But, like June, I pick the goldenrod one, as I think it complements the style of the chair the best. They are all perky and fun!
I love the apron, and will have to look up that style. I have been thinking of sewing an apron for myself. I started sewing when we needed cloth face-masks a couple of years ago. Now my machine is gathering dust again.

Thank you for that feedback Lorna. Had I been making the covers for someone’s dining room I would have chosen more cohesive patterns but my aim was to showcase as many different ways of using scraps as possible. They will be used in the shop, the window display and for courses once those start.

I chose the apron design because it covers more of my clothes than the usual ones – I am a very messy cook with a habit of rubbing my hands down my sides! And there is no need to tie strings behind my back. having started sewing again I really want to continue and can’t think why I stopped.

Well, your chairs do showcase the fun various ways you used scraps! Each chair seat has so much personality!
        I too would benefit from a full-coverage apron.😁

I started answering your question about the chairs but then kept changing my mind. I love purple though and the stripy one with the two red stripes looks real fun.

    Lovely to see your work.
