and show what we have made from scraps.

When I visited Mrs Snail (Use the link for Jan to find her blog) in her new shop she showed me a set of 6 dining chairs which had been left by the previous occupants. They are perfectly good chairs and she will need some in the shop especially when she starts to run courses, but the seat covers are very boring and rather stained.

So I offered to make new covers for them. And as the shop will be all about mending and using scrap I have set myself the challenge of doing all the covers entirely from scrap but each using a different technique. You may be rather tired of these chairs by the time I have finished!

I have finished the top for the first one using granny squares made entirely from bits of yarn from my stash. The piece needs to be attached to a backing of furnishing fabric big enough to go over the edges and be stapled to the underside. I have some old curtains given me by a neighbour which should do the trick.

The next one is begun but you will have to wait until April to see that!

Thank you. It looks great – you are such a star. I’m really sorry I’ve not been in touch, but you can imagine how busy I have been! Anyway… I now have some donated scrap furnishing fabric, so if there is anything you need in that department (or indeed anything else) just let me know.

I am really enjoying the challenge of making them in different ways and varying styles so I am glad you like the first one. As to not being in touch – I knew you would be very busy so I wasn’t expecting you to be. I probably have enough scrap for these seats and plenty to give to you for the shop but I will ask if there is a particular thing I need that is not in my collection.

I have always regretted not learning to crochet. This cover is not only lovely to look at, but will be comfortable to sit on.

I am glad you like it! The chairs are basically sound and not uncomfortable but they need a bit of zing! Learning to crochet is quite easy and granny squares are a good way to use up short lengths of yarn.

I hope one day you get to use it! The next one will be less colourful since not everyone shares my taste for y=the multi-coloured brights!

I think the way you have different centres is great, well done for using the scraps of yarn. I am on mission to reduce my stack of yarn by making baby blankets which makes for some interesting colour combinations!

I happened to have 3 or 4 orphan blocks of the same size but in different colour combinations so those were the atarting point and as they had 2 difeent centers I made more in the same patterns. The whole ethos of the new shop is mending and using scrap so that set my challenge. Glad you like the result. Do share pictures of your baby blankets.

I like progress posts, myself. I’m looking forward to seeing how you treat the other 5!

They will all be quite different in both technique and in the collour combinations I use – not everyone likes my multi-coloure and bright approach!

Number 2 is well on its way but I may not post about it until next scrap-happy! Glad you liked this first one.

Oh,what a fun idea to make them all different – they do look like nice chairs to begin with!

The chairs look to have been a reasonably expensive set to begin with – just worn and tired with grubby seats! I am hoping that people who visit the shop will like at least one of them and see what can be done with scrap to give old furniture a new lease of life.

what a great idea and good luck carrying on – can’t wait to see each different one. Wish I was close enough to sit on each of them.

I think making 6 the same would test my patience too far so making them all different is good from my point of view and demonstrating different ideas is a good excuse!

Love the idea of using different technique for each chair!

6 the same would bore me – showing different techniques is my excuse! I hope you like at least some of them – they will deliberately be quite varied.
