Tidying up my workshop and woodshed I discovered that I had accumulated, for who knows where, 3, yes 3 kitchen sinks! Actually the one in the shed on the veg patch is never used so make that 4. If I put another kitchen / utility room in anywhere am I really going to use a shabby old sink? No!
The inspiration struck. Sinks are intended to hold water and I need more small ponds in my garden to attract wildlife. A small hole, some scrap wood to build up the sides a bit, a new pond liner (the scrap I was going to use was too small and had got torn) and here it is.
It obviously needs more pebbles on the draining board. Nice round seashore pebbles not the rough ones from around the garden or out of the stream. I persuaded my friend Lindy (It wasn’t hard!) to take a trip to the seaside to have a walk on the beach and collect some. Just after this photo was taken a rogue wave came in and I got water in one wellie! Walking on the beach with one wellie sloshing and my pockets weighed down with pebbles had us both in stitches. It is going to take a few more trips to get enough to finish this job – a hard job but someone has to do it!

A great piece of Happy Scrapping! When people say they are taking everything but the kitchen sink, well, now I know where the kitchen sink ends up – at your place! It will be great to see what wildlife take up residence…

I was a bit shocked to realise how many there were and have no idea how it happened! As it is a very small pond I am not expecting very interesting wildlife but even if it just acts as a bird bath it will be useful. And better than cluttering up the sheds.

I have a vision of you lurching and squelching along, weighed down by your stony loot! Thank heavens you didn’t fall on your face or you might never have got up again! Do post a photo of the finished pondlet for next month’s ScrapHappy!

Despite the squelch, the wind and the weight it was a lovely walk. I will try to remember to post a ‘finished’ picture in due course but it may take a while – I need a lot of walks to get enough pebbles for a start!

Thank you Cathy. A night upside down beside a radiator did the trick. I just need to make several more trips to the beach for more pebbles and tidy up around the frame then get some plants for the pond bit.

I have lots in the garden – and I used to occasionally find one in the kitchen before I got a new door with no gap under it! Mostly they stay out of sight unless I move something and uncover one.

great idea, will be interested to hear what wildlife the pond attracts. Mine mainly brings the racoons – not exactly what I want! I always come home from the beach with a pocket full of rocks.

A word of warning about pebble gathering. We were doing this a little while ago for some project my DH had in mind but somebody in my craft group told me it was illegal to take pebbles from the beach. I could hardly believe it as, here on the jurassic coast, people are taking fossils away all the time – they even sell hammers and other kit to facilitate it – but I Googled it and it’s apparently true. I don’t know whether that’s just England though, maybe Wales is different.

I have no idea if the law is different here. I imagine it is to stop landscapers and builders taking pebbles by the dumper truck load. I doubt if I will be had up for gathering a pocketful but thank you for the warning.

Great idea! Picking good looking pebbles is a great hobby, not just on the beach.

The fireplace in my sitting room was built using stones from the stream in the garden but they are quite jagged. Beach pebbles are smooth and rounded which is what I wanted for this project. I can’t resist picking up interesting ones and shells whenever I walk on a beach!

A ladder, a lightbulb and a kitchen sink…what a lot of delightful non-textile scraps are being transformed this month! I love that objects as well as fabrics are finding their way into new shapes and uses!

My house name sign, which I’ve just repainted, is a large boulder. Luckily it was here when I moved in….so “Not guilty, m’lud”. It is very heavy and must have come from the local beach.
