Actually these are things I made last year but were Christmas presents so had to stay secret until now!
John’s immune system had been very damaged by all the chemotherapy so we hardly ever saw our grandchildren and in consequence struggled to know what they might like for Christmas or Birthdays and what they already had We got into the habit of sending a small token gift and putting what we would have expected to spend into a bank account so that we could help fund things like school trips that their parents might struggle to afford. I still send them either just a card or a small handmade something. This year, for grandson number 2, who is 19 and currently has a small motorbike, I will top up what his Mum can afford for driving lessons for him to ensure he is able to pass his test.
Anyway, this years gift to all the grandchildren, including the fostered ones, was based on a free pdf download pattern from Ann Wood handmade. I chose to do more embroidery on mine than she specifies and used beads not small buttons for the eyes. It used very small scraps, part of a reel of ribbon I had been given, left over embroidery thread, stuffing from stock and a lot of love.

And they are received with love. Ours hung on the tree and now mine sits by my desk watching me wade through research and essays with a knowing assurance. 😊

This week the foster grandchildren moved on to a new foster home so I am really glad they had a small momento of me to take with them.

how lovely. For many years I made our Christmas cards which incorporated a tree dec that I also made. Since I started silversmithing as my job, I’ve not needed the creative fix from them, so last year and this, I stopped doing what had become an obligation and bought or commissioned handmade ones instead, but I still make the occasional decoration as a gift for specially special people 😉
I love putting decorations people made or chose for us up every year – I’m sure these will be treasured for both how they look and also what they signify, Thank you for sharing them.

Thank you Dawn. We used to make our own Christmas cards then sent fewer and fewer each year as electronic stuff made them seem less important. This year I decided to send some again as I thought getting a real card would be a nice treat for people but I had enough bought ones left – all those part packets! – that I used those. Maybe next year I will make some for the people who are special to me. I have made decorations for people over the years and I still use some for the first Christmas tree we ever had – next Christmas will be heir 50th outing!
