My increasing deafness is entirely caused by my brain not processing sound properly – my ears are fine. Apparantly this problem is genetic and sadly my grand-daughter has it too and whereas mine only became a problem in middle age and only affects my hearing she has always struggled to process speech and language n written form as well.
I do sometimes wonder if the problem is made worse by the fact that I actually enjoy silence so there is little motivation for me to push my brain to ‘hear’.
That love of peace and quiet is why I try to use only hand tools. I hate the racket of power tools. This morning I was doing some gardening whilst it was still cool. The birds singing was the only sound I could hear. There is never much traffic on the road here but even less now we are all in lockdown. Add in a Bank Holiday and I have only heard 2 vehicles pass all morning.
The sounds I do want to hear are the birds singing, bees buzzing, the breeze rustling the trees, the stream burbling on its way, my cats purring, the grandfather clock ticking, the timer telling me my meal is cooked or bread baked….
From that perspective this place is perfect.

It’s funny that some people find their sound ANNOYING… once some people complained and cheered when trees were cut down, on the ground that birds on the trees were causing too much disturbance with their noises (!!!!!!)… from what planet are these people from??

Your location sounds wonderful from the perspective of quiet. For once, I can directly feel this quiet rather than imagine it because at the moment there is very little traffic where I live. Under normal circumstances there is the roar of the M1 about a mile away but particularly at night there is a delightful peace 😊.
I’m sorry to hear of your condition, though – and that your granddaughter appears to have it more severely.

Lockdown has its advantages! My hearing problem is not life threatening or life limiting – just a nuisance sometimes. My granddaughter copes very well with her version of it. Interestingly now she is doing schol work at home at her own pace her grades have gone up quite a bit.

Interesting indeed that your granddaughter’s grades have gone up whilst learning at home. It shows you that there are definitely preferred learning styles (this is being poo-pooed in certain circles at the moment, which I think has more to do with the extra time and effort needed to accommodate it).

Perfect peace! It gives us time to settle into our own thoughts, doesn’t it? (I am with you about loud machine noises. I hate the vacuum cleaner, which is one of the reasons I use it sparingly!)

I’m really enjoying it too. Less quiet than usual at the allotments, but wonderful at home, which is where I am mostly.

I imagine lots of people are spending more time on their allotments – something I hadn’t thought about. I am certainly in the garden more.

We have a neighbour- albeit 250m or so away, who decided the other day to do stuff in his garden accompanied by really loud Eurotrash songs of which every word could be clearly heard. I wouldn’t mind but he’s well into his 60s. That certainly shattered our usual peace and quiet which is otherwise only disturbed at the moment by birdsong and the occasional clink of boules knocking into each other while another neighbour plays petanque.

A couple of years ago a neighbouring house was sold to a man who lives abroad. Lat year he had a huge extension built – bigger than the original house. And he had the willows that grew around the lake there dug out and the whole area cleared and replanted. Every day for months there was the noise of chainsaws, dihggers and cement mixers! Luckily it now seems to be finished. The clink of boules would actually be rather nice – such a slow soothing sort of activity.

How awful. We had a similar thing with a nearby swimming pool. It went on for ages and then the company doing it went bust and the new one said the first one had done it all wrong so it all started again.
I do actually like the clink of the boules but not so much I’ve ever learnt to play it very well myself.
